Thickeners are used primarily to settle water. Slurry enters the feed well where it is mixed with flocculant. The flocculant assists with settling the silts and foreign particles. The rakes slowly turn to capture the sludge which is directed to the discharge cone. Clearwater overflows the top of the thickener via a weir to be discharged back into the process.

Things to look out for when buying second-hand is whether the unit is bolted construction or welded construction. Bolted construction makes it easier to dismantle and reassemble
